RealityTrader Blog: STOPS: Why Don't We Keep Them

With everything said and written on the subject of stops, it should be given that everyone is conditioned to keep them religiously even before they start trading. No matter what source a newer trader turns to, utter importance of stops will be underlined and emphasized up to the degree that keeping them is heralded as the ultimate key to success. We all heard adages like “Take care of your losses, profits will take care of themselves”. Do all the stern warnings work? Not really. (more)

Procrastination and system development

My research suggests that the problems people have in developing a trading system fall into five different categories.   The first three areas prevent traders from ever starting (or finishing) the development of a trading system. These include computer/technology phobia, procrastination, and being overwhelmed by the whole process. The last two problems tend to prevent the trader from coming up with a workable system. These include perfectionism and judgmental biases in your thinking. (more)

Do you have a problem with exiting your positions too early? I always have.  It’s one aspect of my trading that concerns me because I’m never sure if closing it early was the smart thing to do.  Let me give you an example which just happened to occur today.  I went long on the EUR/CAD before the European session open.  I went to bed and woke up to see the position up 80 pips.  I had a 100 pip stop loss and a 200 pip target.  I was a bit surprised to see it up this much ...
